Mayor Sarno Issues Statement on Springfield Native and NFL Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti’s Passing

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states, “First of all, my thoughts, sympathy, prayers and encouragement to Nick’s family and friends, especially his wife Lynn, children and brother Peter. From the streets of the South End to the fields of Emerson Wight Park to Mercolino’s Bakery and Cathedral High School, “Skippy” Buoniconti became one of the all-time greats and an NFL Hall of Famer. We are proud of this native son of Springfield as he would always reflect upon his family upbringing, hard work ethic and Springfield roots as the solid foundation for all his successes. Throughout his lifetime, he never forgot his hometown. Even with all of his accolades on the football field, and as an attorney and broadcaster, he always dealt with life’s challenges with class and dignity and raised millions of dollars for his son’s charity, The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis, to assist others who endured these tragic situations.”
