Union Station is Charging into the 21st Century

Springfield is first in WMass to take advantage of new Eversource electric vehicle program

It’s full steam ahead for Springfield’s newly renovated Union Station. The historic landmark is now home to the first electric vehicle charging ports in Western Mass installed as part of Eversource’s new program to support the installation and connection of strategically located charging stations.

“We applaud Congressman Neal and Mayor Sarno for their leadership in Union Station’s monumental transformation,” said Eversource Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer Jim Hunt. “We believe one of the keys to driving more customers to use electric vehicles with confidence is knowing that when they hop off their train or bus, their vehicle will be charged and ready for the next leg of their commute.”

“The world of transportation and clean energy is rapidly advancing,” said Massachusetts Congressman Richard Neal. “It takes strong partnerships to accomplish our clean energy goals by creating accessible public transportation as we’ve done at this historic landmark, preserving our past while roaring in the future.”

"Our city is in the driver’s seat increasing public access to multiple forms of transportation, and electric charging stations are the icing on the cake,” said Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno. “Public transportation provides people with mobility and access to employment, community resources, medical care, and recreational opportunities in communities across the commonwealth.”

As part of its commitment to increased electric vehicle use, Eversource is powering the possibilities for Massachusetts by helping to expand the availability of public charging stations. The energy company is partnering with charging station companies to support the installation of thousands of new charging ports at hundreds of strategically located sites across the commonwealth.

Over the next five years, Eversource will spend $45 million toward grid modifications to accommodate the new locations. When complete, this will be one of the largest deployments of electric charging station infrastructure in the country.
