Mayor Sarno Issues Update on 49 Belmont Ave.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states, “Last Friday, March 23rd, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency and the City of Springfield hosted a Recovery Resource Center at the South End Citizens Council, Inc. to bring together resources to assist all of the families in need after the devastating fire at 49 Belmont Ave which occurred on Sunday, March 18th. My city team has been working diligently with the property management to restore the building to safe conditions, and some residents have been returning back to their homes.

“I extend my deepest thanks to the following organizations and individuals for their dedication and assistance: MEMA, Congressman Richard E. Neal, South End Citizens Council, Department of Transitional Assistance, Department of Housing and Community Development, Springfield Housing Authority, Jewish Family Service Inc., Islamic Society of Western Massachusetts, Springfield Partners for Community Action, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey, U.S. ATF, Springfield Department of Emergency Preparedness, Springfield Fire Department, Springfield Police Department, Springfield Department of Health and Human Services, Springfield Housing and Code Enforcement, PVTA, Paul Picknelly and Premier Choice Realty.

“Additionally, my special appreciation goes out to Thad Leugemors, Mitigation and Disaster Recovery Section Chief for MEMA and my internal team including Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi, Police Commissioner John Barbieri, Commissioner of Health & Human Services Helen Caulton-Harris, Director of Housing Gerry McCafferty and my Chief of Staff Denise Jordan for their tireless efforts on the ground in helping the families affected. Springfield is truly a caring community, as evident by the number of agencies, religious organizations, public officials and community residents who offered their help, support and encouragement during this very difficult time.”
