This past Friday, the Hampden County Hall of Justice was dedicated in the name of the Honorable Roderick L. Ireland, a Springfield native who served as the first African-American Chief Justice on the Massachusetts Judicial Court from 2010 to 2014. The building at 50 State Street, which houses the Hampden County Superior Court, Springfield District Court, and offices for the Hampden County District Attorney, registry of deeds and probate court, will not be known as the Roderick L. Ireland Courthouse. Family, friends and colleagues of Judge Ireland attended the ceremony. Speakers included Governor Charlie Baker, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Speaker of the MA House of Representatives Robert DeLeo, former U.S. Attorney Wayne Budd, Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court Ralph D. Gants, retired State Representative Benjamin Swan, Massachusetts Trial Court Chief Justice Paula M. Carey, and State Representative Russell E. Holmes.
