Mayor Sarno Issues Update on Puerto Rican Hurricane Relief Efforts

Friday, September 29, 2017

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states that his internal city team led by Chief of Staff Denise Jordan and Aide Minnie Marrerro indicates that after participating on a federal government update call led by U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren that the need now is for monetary donations towards Puerto Rican hurricane relief. The outpouring of supplies and donations has been outstanding and deeply appreciated. Also, Mayor Sarno indicates he has directed his internal departments to plan to be prepared for the influx of family and friends, who may travel to Springfield for help. Mayor Sarno has also spoken to with Governor Baker’s Western Mass Director Mike Knapik on facilitating state assistance and Congressman Neal on federal assistance, too. We will continue to update our assistance efforts accordingly.

Monetary donations can be made to the “Western Mass Puerto Rican Relief Fund” at Freedom Credit Union. All of the money collected will go to organizations working directly with victims of the hurricane. Edward Nuñez, Assistant Vice President of Commercial Lending at Freedom, is a member of the Western Massachusetts United for Puerto Rico coalition that is leading this effort. The coalition consists of political leaders, nonprofit organizations, business owners, religious leaders and community activists that will be organizing donation drives and fundraisers and working with the government of Puerto Rico to send aid where it is most needed.
