Mayor Sarno Performs Outdoor Piano Concert!

Wednesday, August 9, 2017

As of this afternoon, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno has a new talent – piano! He was treated to a piano lesson taught by Community Music School of Springfield faculty member Sofya Shainskaya at 1350 Main Street, on one of the Springfield Central Cultural District’s (SCCD) three Painted Pianos, sponsored in part by the Springfield Cultural Council.

Three beautified pianos were decorated and placed throughout the Springfield Central Cultural District in early June, with the mission to bring music to the people, and people to the streets. The locations are at 1350 Main Street, the Shops at Marketplace, and 1550 Main Street. Since then, professionals have been performing lunchtime concerts every Wednesday afternoon.

“The Mayor sponsored an hour of music, and in turn, an anonymous donor sponsored another hour, but with the stipulation that the Mayor was the musician,” shared Morgan Drewniany, Executive Director of the SCCD. “When I reached out to his office with the request – the response was immediate and strong… YES! It should be so fun to watch Mayor Sarno maneuver the pedals and keys in the same way we’ve seen passerby enjoying this public art installation.”

Mayor Sarno added, “Liberace or Billy Joel I am not, but hey, it’s for a good cause – we’ll all have a good laugh!”

This programming is made possible by generous individual and organizational sponsors including the Doleva family, Lessard Property Management, NAI Plotkin, Rus Peotter, Mayor Sarno, Springfield Technical Community College and Senator James Welch. Funding for the pianos was provided by the Springfield Cultural Council, Community Music School of Springfield, and ChooseSpringfieldNow.com.
