Painted Pianos Unveiled as Latest Public Art Installment in Downtown Springfield

Monday, June 12, 2017

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Morgan Drewniany, Executive Director of the Springfield Central Cultural District (SCCD) and SCCD Board Chairman Russ Peotter held a ribbon cutting and celebration to launch the painted pianos project in Downtown Springfield’s Central Cultural District. State Senator Jim Welch and City Councilor Kateri Walsh, also a board member of the SCCD, came out to support the project. As the latest public art installment in Downtown Springfield, three pianos have been installed at the Market Place Shops, 1350 Main Street and 1550 Main Street.

The painted pianos project is linked to the international “street pianos” movement, with participating cities including London, Paris, and Sydney, and follows the success of last summer’s painted utility boxes. The public is invited to view and play the pianos on display at each of the locations.

Information on the umbrella project can be found at http://www.streetpianos.com/.
