Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Tom Belton, Director of the Springfield Veterans’ Services Department, held the annual Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony this morning at City Hall. Mayor Sarno and Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris gave opening remarks and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Israel Rivera.
Mayor Sarno offered a proclamation in honor of the service men and women who gave their lives to ensure our freedom. He said, “Though for many, Memorial Day is celebrated for picnics and retail sales, we should always remember and never forget the ultimate sacrifice our Veterans put forth so we can lead the lives we lead.”
Gumersindo Gomez, MA State President of Veterans Affairs in America, served as guest speaker for the ceremony. State Representatives Carlos Gonzalez and Angelo Puppolo and City Councilor Adam Gomez took part in the laying of the wreaths. The procession was led by the U.S. Marine Corps. Color Guard.
