Governor Charlie Baker, Secretary of Education Jim Peyser Visit Forest Park Middle School to Discuss Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership

Tuesday, May 16, 2017

Governor Charlie Baker and Secretary of Education Jim Peyser visited Forest Park Middle School today to discuss the Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership (SEZP), a unique partnership made up of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Springfield Public Schools (SPS), Springfield Education Association (SEA), and Empower Schools. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Senator Eric Lesser, Superintendent Daniel Warwick, SEZP Chairman Chris Gabrieli, education leaders, principals and teachers representing participating schools discussed the success of the partnership, with Mayor Sarno adding that the partnership is being recognized both statewide and nationally as a model program.

SEZP believes that individual schools are the unit of success in education, and thus has partnered closely with SPS and the SEA to ensure that each school has the necessary autonomy and flexibility to create the best educational environment for its students. Individual schools, rather than the school district or SEZP board, will make key operational decisions such as hiring, scheduling, budgeting, and curriculum.
