Congressman Richard E. Neal Announces Co-Hosts of Union Station Grand Opening Gala

Congressman Richard E. Neal, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, and Spirit of Springfield President Judith Matt gathered today at Springfield Union Station to announce the co-hosts of the Grand Opening Gala that will take place on Saturday, June 24, 2017. These individuals are James Murren, CEO of MGM Resorts International, represented at the press conference by Michael Mathis, President and Chief Operating Officer of MGM Springfield; Maura McCaffrey, President and Chief Executive Officer of Health New England; and William Pepin, President and General Manager of WWLP-22News.

Congressman Richard E. Neal said, “I am thrilled that after more than 40 years, this historic building will re-open at the end of June. It is a tremendous accomplishment and I am thankful to the co-chairs who have offered to lend a hand in making sure that the opening is done right for all members of the public to enjoy.”   

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated, “Very appreciative of our generous business community and corporate citizens for once again stepping up to the plate to be major sponsors of the grand reopening of Union Station. I'm deeply thankful to Congressman Neal and my city team for their continued and dedicated efforts in completing this pivotal milestone project. Union Station plays an important role in our overall $3.3 billion in economic development.”

"I am honored to be a member of the distinguished host committee for the upcoming gala to celebrate the rebirth of Union Station,” said Jim Murren. “Thanks to the passion and perseverance demonstrated by Congressman Neal and Mayor Sarno, this historic transit facility will again welcome visitors and serve residents.  Springfield is on the eve of an epic comeback and MGM Resorts is proud to play a role."  

Maura McCaffrey said, “Health New England is very proud to join Congressman Neal, WWLP and MGM to host the Union Station Gala. The mission of Health New England is to improve the health and lives of the people in the communities we serve.  The transformation of Union Station will improve the lives of families and benefit employers through job creation and access to improved transportation while providing new opportunities in the city, including attracting more people who want to live downtown. 

Union Station honors the great history of the train station and creates a modern luxury that is new and exciting,” McCaffrey continued.  “This is a remarkable combination which truly reflects the commitment of everyone who made this project come to life.  We congratulate Congressman Neal for leading the preservation of this important landmark’s beauty and development as a major transportation hub for future generations to enjoy.”

“The long awaited revitalization of Springfield’s Union Station is the result of exhausting efforts by many,” said William Pepin. “Most influential in making this project a reality has been Congressman Neal.  His perseverance and resolve to bring this project to fruition is a good example of successful collaborative efforts between Federal and local officials to improve the economic vitality and quality of life in Springfield.”

“The Spirit of Springfield is excited to be a part of Springfield’s Union Station celebration.  The gala will be fitting of the historic building as it makes it rebirth,” said Judy Matt, Spirit of Springfield President.  “We have a great team of professionals working on the project to ensure a memorable weekend of activities.”

Springfield Union Station will host a weekend of grand opening activities in addition to the gala including a private Open House for construction workers and their families, and a general public Open House. Both of those events will take place on Sunday, June 25.
