The Hampden County Sheriff’s Department kicked off the Joseph and Mary Nicholson Day of Community Service to honor the lives of Joseph and Mary Nicholson. For 15 years under now retired Sheriff Michael Ashe, Joe Nicholson was the assistant superintendent/director of the Western Massachusetts Correctional Alcohol Center, now known as the Western Massachusetts Recovery & Wellness Center, a regional, residential facility for the comprehensive treatment of substance abuse offenders. Sheriff Nick Cocchi was joined by former Sheriff Michael J. Ashe and Mayor Domenic J. Sarno to celebrate the day of giving back to the community. Staff members, along with friends and family of the Nicholsons, met at the Mill Street Addiction Center and broke off to serve lunch at the Springfield Rescue Mission, plant flowers at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, beautify the Mill Street island and Johnny Appleseed Park.
