Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Congressman Richard E. Neal, Chief Development Officer Kevin Kennedy and Springfield City Officials gathered today at Union Station to receive a check from Columbia Gas Executives in the amount of $18,050.00 for two energy efficient gas-fired boilers that were installed in the building to incentivize high efficiency energy options over a standard efficient boiler.
Mayor Sarno said, “Columbia Gas and Steve Bryant have been an excellent and responsible corporate citizen. This continues my administration’s initiatives to ‘go green.’”
"Columbia Gas has been a great corporate partner to the City of Springfield and this collaboration in the Springfield Union Station project illustrates that. Having these energy efficiency boilers not only provides the City with a substantial savings but it also helps our community reach its goals to be environmentally friendly," said Congressman Richard E. Neal.
Columbia Gas President Stephen Bryant said, “Columbia Gas has partnered with the City of Springfield for several years in their efforts to ‘go green.’ Since December of 2014, we have been able to provide nearly $200,000 in rebates on equipment purchased that will generate energy savings of nearly $1million over the life of the equipment.”
Kevin Kennedy, Chief Development Officer for the City of Springfield, said that “Union Station is a historic renovation that includes all the qualities and benefits of a 21st century building.”
Springfield Union Station was built in 1926 and is reaching the end of a $95 million rehabilitation effort to restore the state-of-the-art transportation center to its original grandeur. Its grand opening this June will usher in a new era of expanded rail travel in the region.
