Mayor Sarno and DPW Director Cignoli Issue Snowstorm Update

Springfield, MA – Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Chris Cignoli, Director of the Department of Public Works, indicate current update and important information to our residents:

  1. Snow is expected to start around 2:00 a.m. with 2” of accumulation by 8 to 9:00 a.m. Intensity will pick up quickly after that with 7” expected by noon and 9” by 1:00 p.m.

  2. Due to the impending snowstorm,  the recycling facility will not be open tomorrow. Please to all our affected residents, do not put out your recycling barrels tomorrow. We will get an alternate date for pick-up of this route later today or tomorrow and send out proper notification ASAP. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

  3. Parking Ban will be in effect for 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning – no parking on the odd side of the street from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. No parking on the even side of the street from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. We will be initiating an aggressive ticketing and towing program all day. Expect that we will keep the ban on indefinitely. We thank you very much for your assistance with this matter in order for DPW to properly plow our streets. We will notify you as soon as the parking ban concludes for this storm.

  4. We will have crews out all night doing some pre-treating and expect that we will start our full plowing operation until around 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. We would expect that this will be a 12-14 hour plowing operation.

  5. Based upon the information we have, the snow will be VERY intense from 10:00 am to 3:00 p.m. +/- so travel will be EXTREMELY difficult.

  6. For any plowing concerns, residents should call from their landline 311 —or from a mobile phone, (413) 736-3111.

Also, there will be another National Weather Service update call this afternoon in which Mayor Sarno, Director Cignoli, Emergency Preparedness Director Bob Hassett and Superintendent Daniel Warwick will obtain notices of any significant changes. Please know that residents and the city will always err on the side of caution and public safety. Please continue to monitor all media outlets for further updates. In the meantime, be properly prepared and stay safe.
