Congressman Richard E. Neal, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Holyoke Soldiers Home Superintendent Bennett Walsh gave an exclusive tour of Union Station today for a group of Western Massachusetts veterans and residents of the Soldiers Home. Since its construction in 1926, the iconic train station in downtown Springfield has played a significant role in the lives of countless members of our Armed Forces. It’s the place where they departed for their military service, and the setting for their return home to loved ones. Today’s tour is an expression of appreciation and gratitude to our local soldiers for their honorable service. The renovated and restored Union Station will open to the public this year.
Additionally, Mayor Sarno and the Springfield Redevelopment Authority announced the signing of a trio of new leases for the newly redeveloped Springfield Union Station. The new leases include Dunkin’ Donuts, Subway, and Commuter Variety.
“As we move closer to opening day for Union Station we’re excited to announce some of our new tenants in the building,” said Mayor Sarno. “It’s been great to see the positive interest of national and local businesses that want to be part of this transformative project.”
The three tenants will occupy some of the ground floor retail spaces in the main terminal, providing food and convenience retail to passengers. The $94 million Union Station project includes a new 377-space parking facility, Amtrak and future commuter rail, a 26-bay regional and intercity bus facility, and over 70,000 square feet of commercial space.
Much of the construction of the building is nearing completion, and crews are now going through final touches for a planned spring opening to the public.
“The building looks fantastic,” said Armando Feliciano, Chairman of the Springfield Redevelopment Authority. “Congressman Neal, Mayor Sarno, and the SRA have all been focused on ensuring the success of this project and it’s all coming to fruition.”
The SRA continues to negotiate and seek tenants for the remainder of commercial and retail spaces. Interested parties should contact the Springfield Redevelopment Authority for further information.
