Mayor Domenic J. Sarno announced today that he has appointed Dr. Gary Berte to the Community Police Hearing Board (CPHB). Dr. Berte brings extensive first-hand experience and knowledge of criminal justice and community relations to the CPHB. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Springfield College and priorly served as a Springfield Police Officer. Mayor Sarno said, “I’m grateful to have Dr. Berte on board- he’s renown in his expertise in the criminal justice field. He continues to add to a very diverse composition of distinguished residents that currently serve on the board. Their dedication, integrity, honesty and professionalism is deeply appreciated.”
“The words ‘police’ and ‘politics’ have the same origins that go back to ancient Greek meaning ‘city.’ As translated over the centuries it meant, ‘public order, public administration, and citizenship.’ Every citizen's voice is valuable. Currently there are over 100 such boards in cities across our nation. These boards offer an objective and independent process that is essential to build and maintain trust between our Police Department and our community,” said Dr. Berte. “As a Springfield native and resident, I am humbled and honored to offer service to my city as a member of the Community Police Hearing Board.”

- Pastor Gail Hill – Former Police Officer, Pastor of The Family Church in Mason Square
- Robert “Cee” Jackson – Owner, Jackson Security Company
- Albert Tranghese – Retired HR/Labor Professional, American Saw
- Linda Caron – Property Manager
- Paul Phaneuf – Owner of the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Funeral Home
His appointment replaces CPHB member Richard Muise.
