Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Police Commissioner John Barbieri are proud to announce that the Springfield Police Academy graduated 46 new officers today. A graduation ceremony was held at City Stage this morning for Recruit Class #1116, where the recruits received their badges and took the oath to uphold the law and to protect and serve the public. The recruits have successfully completed six months of training and will serve as patrol officers in the City of Springfield. This class of 42 men and four women is the largest class to graduate from the Springfield Police Academy in nearly 20 years.
Mayor Sarno stated, “I’m proud and thankful that these young men and young ladies and their families have the desire to make this sacrifice to serve and protect all of our residents with courage, professionalism, honor and integrity under the progressive leadership of Police Commissioner John Barbieri. Godspeed to them all.”
Commissioner John Barbieri added, “The addition of these highly trained men and women to the ranks of the Springfield Police Department will enhance our efforts to improve public service in our city. They have been trained to serve our citizens as guardians, not warriors. Maintaining staffing is one part of a strategy that increases efficiency, utilizes modern technology and helps us collaborate with our residents, along with our local, state and federal partners to address crime and quality of life issues. Having more officers on the street makes it safer for our residents and our hardworking police men and women. I am grateful to Mayor Sarno for his continued support of our courageous and hard-working Springfield police personnel.”
