Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Congressman Richard E. Neal joined Tom Belton, Director of the Springfield Veterans Services Department, for a press conference to call for volunteers to mark veterans’ graves with flags to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War.
The Springfield Department of Veteran’s Services is requesting for volunteers to come together to plant flags on nearly 20,000 grave sites in advance of Veteran’s Day on Friday, November 11, 2016. The long-standing tradition of placing flags on veterans’ graves is just one of the ways to honor those who bravely served in the armed forces.
Mayor Sarno stated, “Our veterans continue to give back to us – with many making the ultimate sacrifice – please let us all now sacrifice and volunteer to give back to them and their families. Thank you.”
“As we mark the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War, it is right to honor, recognize and thank the men and women who served their country honorably during one of the longest conflicts in our nation’s history. I can think of no better way a grateful public can express their appreciation to our veterans than by placing an American flag on their gravesites for this solemn commemoration. I applaud the work of the Springfield Department of Veteran’s Services for organizing this initiative, and believe our community will come together and participate in such a meaningful event,” said Congressman Richard E. Neal.
“As we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War, this provides another opportunity for the community to honor its Vietnam veterans, as well as those who lost their lives during all wars and conflicts. While no words will ever be fully worthy of their service, nor any honor truly befitting their sacrifice, let us remember that it is never too late to pay tribute to the men and women who answered the call of duty with courage and valor. Let us never forget,” said Director Tom Belton.
