MGM Springfield Kicks-Off Career Launch Sessions

Wednesday, October 5, 2016

MGM Springfield executives today hosted the first of several MGM Springfield Career Launch sessions at the MassMutual Center. Free and open to the public, more than 150 job seekers attended the first session where they heard from MGM Springfield's human resources team about how to best prepare for future job opportunities at the first casino resort in Massachusetts. Denise R. Jordan, Chief of Staff for Mayor Domenic J. Sarno welcomed attendees on behalf of the Mayor to the launch and encouraged them to get involved in the process.

Marikate Murren, MGM Springfield’s Director of Human Resources, said, “Today's session means that our early recruitment process has officially begun. Energetic job seekers who have a desire to work for the industry leader in hospitality and entertainment need to engage with us now to be ready to apply for a job in 2018. Given the level of interest in the thousands of jobs we will be filling in hundreds of categories, this will be a very competitive process so preparation is key."

The Career Launch sessions are open to anyone hoping to learn more about the path to a job with MGM Springfield. Murren led the presentation, explaining the ABCs of the MGM Springfield Career Launch process: A: attend a session; B: build your SkillSmart profile; and C: connect with education and training partners. Murren added one final step: D: discover opportunities with MGM Springfield.

Heidy Abreu, a Springfield resident and SkillSmart user, said, "I was happy to learn that my skills make me a candidate for certain jobs that will be offered at MGM Springfield. Other jobs require additional training, but the good news is I have time and now a better understanding of where to get those new skills."

MGM Springfield will use the SkillSmart online portal tool, which is also available in Spanish, to help build its job-ready workforce pool in Western Massachusetts. SkillSmart will help job seekers evaluate their skills, match them with employment options based on current skills, and if needed, recommend where they may connect with further educational opportunities.

Enrollment through SkillSmart has a double benefit to users, as does MGM's collaboration with area workforce development resources. These combined efforts will enlighten job seekers about job opportunities and training throughout Western Massachusetts, and benefit other area employers as future workforces become better prepared with necessary skills and training.

Once a person has registered with SkillSmart, that user will be notified when new training programs are available, and when MGM Springfield is ready to hire.

Bill Fogarty, Interim President of Holyoke Community College, said, "The focus of Holyoke Community College is on helping individuals get a job, get a better job and to do their job better.  We are pleased to be part of a collaboration of education, business and non-profits where everyone is equally dedicated to providing the right training and guidance for a career with MGM Springfield. As you see today, we are all ready to roll up our sleeves to help put any eager candidate in the best position to be the most competitive they can be for a job."

Dr. John B. Cook, President of Springfield Technical Community College, said, "Without a doubt, we are thrilled to contribute to the tremendous workforce and career opportunities that MGM is bringing to Greater Springfield.  Given our community commitment, and our legacy of partnering with employers, we look forward to this game-changing enterprise."

We are simultaneously focused on building a strong workforce, and today that effort starts in earnest. We will have thousands of jobs to fill, and with our local education and Community Based Organization partners, we are full steam ahead in getting job seekers the information they need to be ready for our hiring process.”
