Mayor Sarno and Senator Lesser Welcome Crew of USS Springfield

Tuesday, October 4, 2016

Senator Eric P. Lesser, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Superintendent of Schools Daniel Warwick welcomed fourteen members of the crew from the USS Springfield, a Los Angeles Class submarine home-ported in Groton, CT, to the City. The crew joined Mayor Sarno and Senator Lesser at M. Marcus Kiley Middle School to speak to students about the submarine, and their experiences.

Mayor Sarno said, “So great to have the crew of the USS Springfield here in Springfield, especially at my old school, Kiley Middle School. I commend Senator Lesser’s efforts to get these brave men and women before our students in order to highlight the career opportunities of service to our country.”

The crew’s visit to the City of Springfield, for which the submarine is named, is part of a namesake visit conducted by the United States Navy to forge strong connections with the Springfield community. Commanding Officer Robert Meyer spoke on behalf of the crew and answered a myriad of questions from the enthusiastic middle schoolers.

“I’m excited to host the crew from the USS Springfield,” Senator Lesser said. “Springfield has a proud tradition of answering the call to serve, and this visit will serve to highlight our city’s strong history of service. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for students to learn the meaning of service.”
