Mayor Domenic J. Sarno brought greetings to the groundbreaking ceremony for Springfield College’s new Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement earlier today. The ceremony was held on the college’s Humanics in Action Day, in which Springfield College students engage in community service projects throughout the City of Springfield.
Formerly the Holy Family Rectory, the new Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement will serve to educate students, while engaging with community members to address community needs.
Mayor Sarno noted how wonderful it was to know that a group nearly 2,000 strong from Springfield College were giving back to make the community a better place. He said, “I’m not surprised by this initiative, it’s in Springfield College’s DNA. I commend SC President Mary-Beth Cooper, the Board of Trustees, staff and students for their continued outreach in enhancing and building a community of one. This most recent effort helps us all better understand, respect and learn from one another. Especially to our youths, this center will increase educational and career opportunities.”
Recently Springfield College received the Presidential Award in the Education category of the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This honor is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement.
