Mayor Sarno Announces the Demolition of 74 Yale Street

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and City of Springfield Housing Officials announced the demolition of the long blighted property at 74 Yale Street on Wednesday, July 13, 2016.

“This is one more step in our efforts in neighborhood revitalization and a continuance of our fight against blight throughout the City of Springfield,” stated Mayor Domenic J. Sarno.

74 Yale Street has been vacant, blighted and abandoned for over seven years.  The City foreclosed on the property for the non-payment of taxes in 2009, at the time of foreclosure the property had been abandoned by the prior owner.  The City attempted to attract developers to rehabilitate the property, including offering CDBG funding for exterior improvements to potential developers.  However, the City has been unsuccessful in its many efforts to attract a feasible developer for the property.  The property has been declared structurally unsound, a threat to public safety and ordered demolished by Building Commissioner Steve Desilets.  This property is being demolished with City of Springfield Demolition Bond funding.  The City anticipates selling the property following demolition.

Asbestos abatement and demolition is being completed by Associated Building Wreckers of Springfield. The total cost of asbestos abatement and demolition is $32,400.00

Environmental oversight of the projects is being performed by ATC of West Springfield.

**Due to the severe deterioration of the building, the City cannot perform traditional asbestos abatement in the building prior to the demolition. Therefore, the entire building will be demolished as hazardous waste and demolition will be on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at 7:30 a.m.**
