Mayor Sarno, Mass DOT and City Officials Provide North End Roadway Construction Updates

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Director of DPW Chris Cignoli, Chief Development Officer Kevin Kennedy, State Representative Carlos Gonzalez, State Senator James Welch, Mass Highway District 2 Director Patrick J. Paul, Project Development Engineer Rich Masse, Neighborhood and Community Partners in providing an update regarding the North End Traffic and Roadway Construction; North Main Street roadway reconstruction project.  The project will rehabilitate and improve the road and pedestrian infrastructure.

Mayor Sarno stated, “I am very appreciative of the good working relationship with Mass DOT and our local state delegation.  This helps us to continue to enhance economic and residential initiatives in our North End area.”

Work will include road rehabilitation, sidewalk repairs and improvements, streetscape amenities like tree plantings, and pedestrian connections on Main Street north of Osgood Street to the Chicopee line (1.3 miles); Arch Street and Huntington Ave between Main Street and Birnie Ave (.25 miles); and Birnie Ave between I-91 exits 9 and 10 (.5 miles).  

Patrick J. Paul, District Highway Director, said, “The Highway Division of MassDOT is pleased to move forward with enhancements to this section of roadway, following improvements recently made to the underground infrastructure by various utilities.  This project will provide a better, safer transportation corridor through the North End for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and is also designed to enhance the beauty of the area with substantial landscaping improvements.”

“We are happy to be partnered with the State on this project,” said Chris Cignoli, Director of the Department of Public Works.  He continued, “The reconstruction of North Main Street from Osgood Street to the Chicopee City line will allow for better traffic flow through the corridor and help the continued development of medical facilities by Baystate Medical Center.”

Chief Development Officer Kevin Kennedy added, “The North Main Street reconstruction project is will bring the roadway up to 21st century standards including improved lighting. The addition of a new signal at Wason and Main is also a major improvement.”
