Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined mayors across the country in issuing a proclamation declaring June of 2016 as National Gun Violence Awareness Month in the City of Springfield.
Committed to reducing gun violence in our city, Mayor Sarno joins communities across the country in supporting “100 Cities to Reduce Gun Violence”; an initiative started by Mayor Lovely Warren of Rochester, NY to acknowledge the need to increase awareness in public safety.
Mayor Sarno said, “I support the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens and as such it goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns away from dangerous people. We renew our commitment to reducing gun violence and pledge to do all we can to keep firearms out of the wrong hands, and encourage responsible gun ownership to help keep our community safe.”
In an effort to address the issue of violence in our city, Mayor Sarno in 2008 established the Mayor’s Citywide Violence Prevention Task Force. The collective has grown to include over 60 agencies, organizations, and individuals whose focus is to develop strategic priorities addressing public safety, youth prevention and intervention programming, and gun and gang violence.
