Springfield Central Cultural District Holds Reception Celebrating the Completion of the Painted Downtown Utility Boxes

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined the Springfield Central Cultural District, artists and project sponsors for a reception on Thursday, June 23 at 3:00 p.m. to celebrate the completion of the painted utility boxes throughout downtown Springfield.

Mayor Sarno said, “Absolutely love it! I commend Morgan and the Springfield Central Cultural District artists. Brings an eclectic mix to our downtown – ‘little things mean a lot’.”

Morgan Drewniany, Executive Director of the Springfield Central Cultural District, explained, "Our mission in the partnership is to solidify Springfield as a cultural destination in New England. We created this program to create art between our existing cultural institutions and provide economic opportunity to local working artists."

The project is an expansion of a pilot from last summer, in which two of the City-owned utility boxes were painted in Stearns Square. This year, a group of 24 local artists were selected by the Springfield Central Cultural District to paint 23 utility boxes throughout the downtown area with the theme of ‘unexpected beauty’.
