Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined Chief Development Officer Kevin Kennedy and developer Roger Roberge to celebrate the completion of the redevelopment of the former Sumner Avenue Fire Station. The station was built in 1925, decommissioned for the new White Street fire station, and sold in 2015 to Mr. Roberge. The ribbon cutting was held this Thursday, May 5, at 10:00 a.m. at 1043 Sumner Avenue.
“Very happy with the Roberge’s continued belief and investment in the City of Springfield and I think it’s great that they’re thinking outside of the box with this very creative and eclectic re-use of our old fire station,” said Mayor Sarno.
The station was sold to Mr. Roberge by the City for $50,022 for the purposes of redeveloping the property into a mixed use space – the first floor will be office space and the second floor will be a large, upscale apartment. The city included in the RFP a historic preservation deed restriction to require exterior changes be approved by the Springfield Historic Commission to ensure the character of the original fire station is preserved.
