City of Springfield Holds its 31st Arbor Day Celebration

The City of Springfield held its 31st annual Arbor Day Celebration today at Elias Brookings Elementary School. Mayor Domenic J Sarno and officials from the Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management joined students in planting a flowering crabapple tree on school grounds. Mayor Sarno presented an official proclamation to commemorate Arbor Day, and students receiveed seedlings to increase their awareness of the environmental, social and economic benefits that trees contribute to the City.

The Arbor Day Foundation just recently recognized the City of Springfield as a Tree City USA for the 30th consecutive year for its commitment in effective urban forest management.

Mayor Sarno states, “How appropriate that we celebrate Arbor Day right in the epicenter of the devastating June 1, 2011 tornado. This continues to show, just like this tree we plant today, that our roots are strong, resilient and will continue to prosper.”

“I am very proud to be the head of the Forestry Division that was established in 1898 and thankful for our dedicated staff. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the citizens of Springfield a Happy Arbor Day,” said City Forrester Ed Casey.
