Mayor Domenic J. Sarno announced today grant funding from MassDevelopment under the Brownfields Redevelopment Fund. To date $1,022,800 has been provided for extensive environmental investigation and remediation in order to build the Union Station Regional Intermodal Transportation Center.
"The rebirth of Springfield's Union Station continues. Today's announcement is another example that the redevelopment of this historic landmark is moving forward. This project will help transform the north blocks of downtown and bring a modern intermodal transportation center to the region. I am very pleased with the progress that is being made by the City in the rehabilitation of this iconic structure" said Congressman Richard E. Neal.
Mayor Domenic Sarno stated, “Thanks to our strong multi-governmental partnerships we are witnessing a critical project to the rebirth of Downtown Springfield move full steam ahead. Between the substantial money already secured by Congressman Neal at the federal level and Governor Patrick along with Lt. Governor Murray and MassDevelopment at the state level, progress is now coming more rapidly. Without this assistance moving this project forward would be almost impossible. ”
The environmental investigation and remediation is occurring at several locations; the former Hotel Charles site (petroleum and underground tanks), the former baggage building (asbestos roof, PCB in the window caulking, asbestos-wrapped pipes), the terminal building (asbestos roof, asbestos-wrapped pipes and PCB in the window caulking), the passenger tunnel (needs testing), and 30 Frank B. Murray Street (needs environmental assessment).
“The Commonwealth’s increased emphasis on transportation makes revitalizing Springfield’s Union Station more critical than ever,” said MassDevelopment President and CEO Marty Jones. “We’re pleased that the Brownfields Redevelopment Fund can contribute to the remediation and redevelopment of this key Gateway City project.”
Tighe & Bond is providing the environmental assessments and the specification needed to complete the environmental work.
