The Alzheimer’s Association® announced various activities surrounding Alzheimer’s Awareness Week around the Pioneer Valley. The city of Springfield will hold a proclamation ceremony to raise awareness and will participate in Go Casual for a Cause, a workplace program which raises funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s by encouraging employees to dress down or wear jeans in exchange for a small donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.
At 10 a.m. on September 20, 2012, Mayor Sarno will pronounce this day as Alzheimer’s Awareness Day in Springfield. Many city employees will also be dressing down for Alzheimer Awareness with funds coming to the Alzheimer’s Association.
According to Kristina Chapell, Development Officer for the Alzheimer’s Association, this is a very big deal for the city. “As we celebrate World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21st and our 20th anniversary of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on September 22nd at Holyoke Community College, having one of the largest cities in the Pioneer Valley recognize the importance of this disease is tremendous. Alzheimer’s is an epidemic and we need the support of individuals throughout the Valley to help us raise awareness and find a cure.”
Mayor Sarno, city officials, Alzheimer’s Association staff and volunteers, and Screech from the Springfield Falcons will be on hand for this very important announcement.
