Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity Hosts Quincy Street Tour with the Mayor

Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity (GSHFH) would like to invite the press on a tour with Mayor Sarno of one of the houses that was recently built as a part of the Home for the Holidays campaign. The tour will be held on July 20th at 9:30am at 237 Quincy Street in Springfield. This house is one of four homes that were built as part of the Tornado Recovery Plan. The three other houses are still in process and slated to be complete by the holiday season 2012.

The blitz style construction on the Quincy Street home began on June 1st and was completed on June 8th and is soon to be home to Toni Jones and her family who were affected by last year’s tornado. It is a three bedroom, one and half bathroom modular house. This is the second time in her life that Jones will be residing on Quincy Street as she lived at this address in her teen years. Jones recently lost the apartment she was renting in West Springfield due to the tornado.

GSHFH had the support of hundreds of volunteers in order to complete this home in just one week. The biggest supporter of the project was the City of Springfield. Through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) the City of Springfield was a lead sponsor, specifically providing all of the funding needed to build 237 Quincy Street for Toni Jones and her family. Other donors such as AmeriCorps NCCC members and professional construction crews contributed over 1200 labor hours in the eight day build.

GSHFH is gladly accepting donations toward the Home for the Holidays campaigns and volunteer labor opportunities are available. Please go to www.habitatspringfield.org for more information or call 413-739-5503.
