Dedication Of Ernie Smith Fields At Blunt Park

On Thursday May 24, 2012, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and the Board of Park Commissioners will dedicate the playing fields at Blunt Park before family and friends of Ernest D. “Ernie” Smith, Sr., former Park Commissioner and community advocate. A monument in remembrance of Ernie Smith will be unveiled at this time.

Ernie Smith served on the Board of Park Commissioner from 1991-2009; he was an active member of the Springfield Community, business owner and friend of all.  Ernie was a man of many talents; he ran a successful barbershop that was a fixture in the Bay area neighborhood and A D.J. on STCC radio.  He was a beloved member of the community and friend of the Park.

In keeping with the spirit of Ernie’s commitment to the youth of Springfield, the playing fields at Blunt Park are to be officially named and known as the Ernie Smith Fields.

Mayor Sarno Stated “Ernie was a very active Park Commissioner and very active in youth sports.  I felt it was important that the city recognize Ernie’s contributions to this city and proud the park commission chose this field to be named in his honor.”

Patrick Sullivan Stated “Ernie Smith was a loyal Park Commissioner and became a good friend and mentor to me. There was many a Saturday, day or night he would call from his patrol of the parks and point out items that should be addressed.  He was instrumental in the restoration of Forest park under the leadership of Bill Putnam and due to his strong background in supporting youth sports and youth programs we have improved our afterschool programs and athletic fields throughout the city. Ernie was a friend to all in the city of Springfield.”
