Public Health Month is a national observance highlighting public health practices and achievements. For Springfield, this month-long celebration draws attention to the cooperative efforts of local institutions, organizations and communities working to address our public health challenges by coordinating events that showcase local efforts.

The City of Springfield and the Public Health Committee will present the 16th annual Luminary Award and the Director’s Award.  The awards promote the recipients contribution towards optimal community, personal and environmental health in Springfield.  The Luminary Award is the highest honor that the Springfield Community of Public Health and Human Service Providers bestow.

The keynote speaker, Qamaria Amatul-Wadud, Youth Coordinator of Gardening the Community, a youth-based urban agriculture program designed to teach and foster principles of self-sustainability.  A 21 year old Springfield native, gardening techniques and practices was instilled in her as a child by her New York-born gardening mother. She has been a member and later a staff member of Gardening the Community since 2004.  Recently, she was honored with an award by the Springfield Food Policy Council entitled “Quamaria Amaatul-Wadud Investment Youth Award”.
