SPRINGFIELD’S DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS SERVICES ANNOUNCES SCHEDULE FOR NATIONAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS

December 20, 2011 – Due to increasing demand for service, the Springfield Department of Veterans Services announced today that the Department has for the first time expanded efforts to have various National Veterans Services Organizations in their office each month; a free and confidential service connecting Veterans and their families. Federally chartered national Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) are recognized or approved by the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary for purposes of preparation, presentation and prosecution of claims under laws administered by the VA.

Springfield’s Director of the Department of Veterans Services Thomas Belton stated “the Springfield Department of Veterans Services wants our veterans to know that we are here to serve them. This is part of the department’s continued commitment to service veterans.”

VSO’s are thoroughly trained and knowledgeable in all areas of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, including service-connected compensation, non-service connected disability pension, education and training, vocational rehabilitation, burial and survivor benefits. They will also assist veterans with VA care eligibility, VA Home Loan Guaranty and other veterans’ benefits, including those offered by the VA. Service Officers are also available for any follow-up work necessary with the VA to obtain the maximum amount of earned benefits due any eligible veteran and/or dependents.
