South End Road Paving to Begin August 5th

August 3, 2010 - The City of Springfield will begin implementing the final phase of construction of Main Street improvements in the City’s South End Neighborhood.  Road paving is scheduled to take place August 5th and 6th (rain date: August 7th). There will be appropriate traffic management and detours during road paving operations.

This construction project is part of the overall South End Revitalization Plan which called for streetscape improvements along Main Street from downtown to the intersection of Locust Street and other infrastructure improvements to the street grid in the Hollywood and Marble Street areas. The construction is anticipated to end in early September.  Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc (VHB) is the project engineer and Baltazar Contractors Inc., is the general contractor.

“We have been committed to reinvesting in all of our neighborhoods and the South End businesses and residents have been great partners in this project,” said Mayor Domenic J. Sarno. “It’s a significant neighborhood and one that we believe will only get stronger with this project,” stated Sarno.

The South End Revitalization Plan was developed through a collaborative process initiated by the City and the Urban Land Institute in 2006 with substantial input from city-wide stakeholders and neighborhood residents.

“Main Street improvements in the South End are a major investment into public infrastructure which is essential to improve the visual quality of this corridor and the front door for the many established businesses”, stated John D. Judge, Chief Development Officer of the City of Springfield.   “This is only one of the phases of the South End revitalization initiative which is comprised of three phases: infrastructure improvements, retail and business development, and housing stabilization,” added Judge.

Additional information on the South End Revitalization Plan is available at the South End Citizens Council Office located at 549 Main Street and online at www.springfield-ma.gov/southendproject.
