MAYOR DOMENIC J. SARNO PARTICIPATES ON MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH MUNICIPAL WELLNESS LEADERSHIP PANEL

June 16, 2010 – Mayor Domenic J. Sarno participated on the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Municipal Wellness Leadership Panel during the Mass in Motion Leadership Luncheon today at the DCU Convention Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Leadership Panel was moderated by Massachusetts Department of Public Health Commissioner John Auerbach.

The purpose of today’s event was to recognize the efforts of local elected officials, municipal departments and community stakeholders in incorporating health concerns in a variety of municipal policy decisions. Mayor Sarno and the 9 other Mass in Motion cities were recognized for increasing access to health, nutritious foods and opportunities for physical activity for the residents of the communities represented at the event.

Mayor Sarno spoke about the City of Springfield Wellness Leadership Council, the Y.M.C.A.’s Achieve Grant, Men of Color Grant, and a number of other initiatives including the Neutral Corner/SECC Boxing Program, and assessments in Springfield that looked at policies and environmental strategies in place in worksites, schools, healthcare settings, and community-based organizations.

The Mayor was accompanied by the City’s Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris, the City’s Violence Prevention Coordinator Tony Pettaway, Brian Connors from the City’s Planning and Economic Development Department and James Morton from the Y.M.C.A.
