36-Inch Water Main Shut Down

Today, the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission will shut down a 36-inch water transmission main entering Springfield underneath the Connecticut River near the South End Bridge.  At about 11:00 a.m., the Commission was notified that silty water was observed in the Connecticut River where the water main crosses.  Upon investigation, it was discovered that the 36-inch main is leaking.  Commission crews are currently working to decrease flow through the pipe and isolate the leak.  The scope of the repair project is being developed.

Customers will continue to receive water service, however residents and businesses primarily in the South End of Springfield, East Longmeadow and Longmeadow may experience lower water pressures.  Other areas of the system may also be affected.

Until further notice, the Commission requests that consumers curtail their outdoor water use during peak demand hours daily from 4:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Water flows and water quality have not changed over the past few months and we will continue to monitor these parameters.
