MAYOR DOMENIC J. SARNO WELCOMEs RECENTLY SWORN UNITED STATES MARSHAL JOHN GIBBONS TO CITY HALL MEETING
May 11, 2010 – Mayor Domenic J. Sarno welcomed United States Marshal John Gibbons to his City Hall office Friday for an informal meeting. During the hour long meeting, Mayor Sarno and Gibbons discussed issues of public safety and youth violence in the City of Springfield.
Mayor Sarno appreciated Gibbons’ visit and stated that “Gibbons gave his pledge to help the City any way he can with public safety and that he would be available to assist with combating youth violence.”
In November 2008, the City of Springfield announced a collaboration between the Springfield Public Schools and the Springfield Police Department aimed at steering children away from gangs, crime, drugs and violence. The Gang Resistance and Education Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program was funded through a grant from the United States Marshals’ Office.
Gibbons, a former state police detective, was sworn in as the state’s lead marshal in Boston on February 26, 2010. He is a graduate of American International College.
