Russian Delegation to Visit City Hall

SENATOR STAN ROSENBERG AND SPRINGFIELD MAYOR DOMENIC J. SARNO TO HOST DELEGATION FROM PSKOV, RUSSIA

March 26, 2010 - State Senator Stan Rosenberg (D-Amherst), President Pro Tempore of the Massachusetts Senate, and Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, will host a day-long series of meetings with a 12-member delegation from Pskov, Russia. The meetings will take place on Monday, March 29th at Springfield City Hall.

The Russian delegation is sponsored by the University of Massachusetts-Amherst Institute for Global Health, directed by Dr. David Buchanan, the Open World program of the Library of Congress and the Cairdes Foundation. During their visit to Springfield, the delegates will explore with their Springfield, Massachusetts counterparts a range of topics, including such municipal infrastructure projects as water/sewer, health and human services and recycling and solid waste disposal programs.

The visit will include a tour of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (United Water, 190 M Street Extension, Agawam, MA). The delegation will also discuss health care issues during a special luncheon session with the City’s Health and Human Services Director Helen Caulton-Harris.

“I have visited Pskov many times over the past few years and in many ways it is comparable to Springfield,” Rosenberg said. “Both cities are working tirelessly to provide the best possible services for their respective citizens while facing significant economic challenges. I have no doubt that these talks will be mutually beneficial,” added Rosenberg.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated that he “looks forward to the delegation’s visit to Springfield.” “This is a terrific opportunity for the City’s Department of Public Works, Facilities Management, Water and Sewer and Health and Human Services to hear about some of the issues that face the officials of Pskov, Russia,” said Sarno.  “This will be a great experience for everyone involved and will offer officials from both cities the opportunity to share ideas and suggestions with each other,” added Sarno.
