2010 Vietnam Veterans Day Ceremony

Richard Tyrell, Chairman of the Springfield Veterans Activities Committee, Inc. has announced that the committee will once again sponsor Springfield's observance of Vietnam Veterans Day. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 1:00PM at the Vietnam Veterans Monument located at Court Square across from Springfield City Hall.

The theme this year is 35th Anniversary of the End of the Vietnam War and the guest speaker for this event is Springfield Police Commissioner William J. Fitchet. Commissioner Fitchet is a 37 year veteran of the Springfield Police Department. For 16 years he was Deputy Chief working in the narcotics and crime prevention bureaus, Squad Commander of the Uniform Division, Police Commissioner since 2008. He also served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1969-1971 with the 1 SY and 2nd Battalions of the 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division serving in South East Asia, Philippines, Okinawa and Japan and received an honorable discharge.

Many local veterans' organizations and their color guards will be participating. Also expected to attend are Congressman Richard E. Neal, Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno along with other elected officials.

The public is encouraged to attend. A special invitation is extended to Gold Star Mothers and families of those names who are inscribed on the Springfield Vietnam Veterans Monument. For further information contact David Bressem at the Springfield Vets Center at 737-5167.
