Board of Public Works
The Board of Public Works is composed of three members appointed by the Mayor for a three-year term. The Board, through petitions referred to them from the City Council, holds public hearings related to projects such as street acceptance, street discontinuance, street line relocation, street name changes, new sidewalks and utilities placed in the public way. The Board handles all matters pertaining to the conversion of Private Ways into Public Ways. The Board levies betterment assessments on abutting properties affected by improvements. The Board makes recommendations to the Mayor and City Council for approval. The Board's staff, which consists of an engineer from the Department of Public Works, schedules all hearings, and drafts all reports and orders for the City Council meetings. Meetings are usually held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:00pm, at site of the project under discussion.
