Mayor Sarno states, “I want to thank Councilor Malo Brown and his leadership and quick call to action in response to this unfortunate incident. I also want to thank AIC President Vince Maniaci and his team for working with my administration to quickly get a traffic safety study done. Thanks to DPW Director Chris Cignoli and his team, especially city engineer Andrew Krar and Emmanuel Russell (who lives right in the neighborhood too), the City of Springfield will move quickly to review and implement traffic and pedestrian safety measures at this location. In addition, under the leadership of Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood, our brave and dedicated men and women in blue will increase traffic enforcement and will provide educational outreach that will hopefully reduce the incidents of distracted drivers and pedestrians who are not paying attention to their surrounding environment. Work and outreach will commence in the very near future.”
Improvements will include the installation of a HAWK Crosswalk system, the narrowing of the roadway and can also include a raised crosswalk. Total cost for the project will be approximately $500,000.
