City of Springfield to Open Forest Park Pool Early Due to Heat Wave

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Executive Director of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management (PBRM) Patrick Sullivan announced today that the Forest Park swimming pool will open Monday, June 28, 2021, a week ahead of schedule, due to the anticipated heat wave. Park splash pads are already open due to an earlier heat wave.

According to local weather services, temperatures are expected to rise into the mid to high 90s starting Monday and lasting throughout the week.

Mayor Sarno states, “I want to remind residents to stay hydrated, check on your elderly neighbors, be mindful of your pets, and please take advantage of our wonderful park facilities that offer the resources to stay cool during these hot days of summer.  I also encourage anyone with lifeguard certifications to consider applying on the City of Springfield’s website.”

Currently, the city has only 18 qualified lifeguard for its swimming locations.  In addition to appropriating funds for early openings, Mayor Sarno has approved an increase in the Lifeguard rate of pay to $18 per hour in the hope of attracting more qualified candidates.
