Mayor Sarno and PBRM Director Sullivan Tour Improvements at Golf Courses

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Executive Director of Parks, Building and Recreational Management (PBRM) Patrick Sullivan, Director of Open Space Peter Krupczak, PBRM Coordinator Tom Dougal, Chief Administrative and Finance Officer (CAFO) TJ Plante, Director of Capital Asset Construction Peter Garvey, Head Golf Professional Ryan Hall and Park Commissioners Billy Christofori and Clinton Harris to tour the improvements made at Franconia and Veterans golf courses.

The improvements for Franconia and Veterans Golf Courses include remediation work to improve drainage systems, sand bunker work including the application of spraying polymer and installing sand and Sod, and work on golf cart paths.

MAS Golf Course Renovations and Construction is the contractor doing the work.  The contract value is $907,904.  The City of Springfield was able to save $150,000 by doing the design specifications in house.  The improvements at both golf courses follow some of the best practices and methods used in some of the most renowned courses from around the country, including Winged Foot Golf Course in New York and TPC Boston.

Mayor Sarno states, “I want to thank PBRM Director Patrick Sullivan, Director of Capital Asset Construction Peter Garvey, and CAFO TJ Plante for their continued commitment in making our beautiful golf courses what they are today.  These improvements are needed and will enhance the experience for golfers for years to come.”

PBRM Director Patrick Sullivan stated, “I appreciate Mayor Sarno, CAFO TJ Plante, and the City Council’s support in authorizing these improvements to our two golf courses.  These improvements are great news for our Franconia and Veterans Golf Courses. We have two of the best Greens Superintendents in New England, Andy Gay and Anthony Kowal, and their staff do a phenomenal job maintaining these two courses. These improvements will enhance the quality of these courses and more importantly protect the courses from the constant environmental changes caused by weather. This investment and the improvements made are paramount to protect the overall quality of our courses for recreational golf for our residents.”

CAFO TJ Plante said, “The investment in improvements and remediation work will help ensure that both Franconia and Veterans Golf Courses will continue to serve the recreational golf needs of our residents for years to come.  The Mayor and I applaud both Parks Director Patrick Sullivan, Capital Asset Construction Director Peter Garvey, and our Golf Pro Ryan Hall for their efforts in keeping our golf courses properly maintained.”

Capital Asset Construction Director Peter Garvey stated, “Thanks to this investment in remediation work, the drainage and bunker systems will stand up to the test of time and allow for many families to have a great golfing experience.  The method used for these improvements are done at some of the best renowned, famous, and prestigious golf courses from around the country.  Thanks to the City of Springfield’s commitment to maintaining both Franconia and Veterans Golf Courses, they are now considered two of the best courses in the country.”

“We received rave reviews about our two public golf courses, Franconia and Veterans – kudos and thanks to Patrick Sullivan and our Golf Pro Ryan Hall and Team for their continued efforts in maintaining these beautiful and affordable courses.  Last year we were recognized by Mass Golf as their Trip #2 of their Golf Staycation,” Mayor Sarno added.
