Mayor Sarno Joined with New England Donor Services for Flag Raising Ceremony for Organ Donation Month

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Representatives from New England Donor Services, local individuals touched by organ donation, State Representative Carlos Gonzalez, and Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) Acting Registrar Colleen Ogilvie on the front steps of City Hall to celebrate April as Organ Donation Month.

Mayor Sarno presented a proclamation declaring April as “Organ Donation Month” and joined in raising the “Donate Life” flag at City Hall to continue our efforts to educate ourselves and others about organ and tissue donation, celebrate the lives saved and enhanced through donation, and honor the donors who made the ultimate gift.

This month we also encourage our friends, family, and community to learn more about organ and tissue donation and ask everyone to consider registering as a donor at the RMV when getting or renewing your driver’s license, Real ID, or ID or online at www.RegisterMe.org.

Mayor Sarno states, “Thousands of lives are saved each year here in Massachusetts because of the selflessness of those who have registered as organ and tissue donors. Registering and getting that heart symbol on your ID is a simple process, but it can truly change lives – and not just for the recipient but for entire families and communities.  I, myself, registered years ago through our Registry of Motor Vehicles. I encourage you all to learn more about and consider this option which can be the ultimate gift for someone in need.”

The state plays an important role in the donation process as the vast majority of individuals in Massachusetts (98%) who register as an organ and tissue donor at the state Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV).  In 2020 over 1,027 lives were saved here in New England because of the generosity of individuals who became organ donors.  Thousands more lives were enhanced through the gift of tissue donation.  With the need for life-saving transplants growing every day - over 108,000 patients are now on the US transplant wait list - it is crucial to educate our communities about taking action to register as donors.

New England Donor Services is the parent organization of New England Organ Bank, the federally-designated Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) responsible for coordinating organ and tissue donation in the six New England States.
