City of Springfield Election Office Offers Early Voting Options and Reminds Residents to Complete their 2020 Census

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Election Commissioner Gladys Oyola announced that the City of Springfield’s Election Office would offer early voting for the 2020 state primary from Saturday, August 22, 2020 through Friday, August 28, 2020 at City Hall and Monday, August 24, 2020 through Thursday, August 27, 2020 at the Clodo Concepcion (Greenleaf) Community Center.  Mayor Sarno and Election Commissioner Oyola would also like to offer a friendly reminder to residents to complete their 2020 Census.

Election Commissioner Oyola also encourages residents to apply to vote by mail.  Residents just need to contact the City’s Election Office and request a vote by mail application.  Residents would than fill out and sign the application and return it to the Election Office in the pre-stamped and pre-addressed envelope.  Once the application is received and approved, the Election Office will mail the resident an election ballot.

In addition, Mayor Sarno and Election Commissioner Oyola stresses the need for every resident, if they have not done so already, to fill out their 2020 Census.

Mayor Sarno stated, “I cannot stress enough how important it is for all of us to fill out our 2020

Census – if you don’t get counted, you don’t count!  There is so much at stake for our communities across the Commonwealth.  I want to thank Secretary Galvin and his team for their leadership efforts to get the message out on how important it is for everyone to return their 2020 Census so our neighborhoods can get their fair share of federal resources and our Commonwealth can maintain our representation in Congress.  I want to also acknowledge and thank our own City of Springfield Election Commissioner Gladys Oyola and her team for their unyielding outreach efforts of making sure our Springfield is accounted for.”

Election Commissioner Oyola stated, “Every Census there are the usual questions residents have.  This year with the ongoing COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, we have seen an added level of difficulty with our outreach efforts.  However, we have remained strong and we have adapted.  In collaboration with the U.S. Census Bureau’s Western Massachusetts Team, Secretary Galvin’s Office and our community partners, we have utilized social media networks, Mobile Questionnaire Assistance events and even door-to-door outreach efforts to help increase self-response rates.”

Census workers who visit homes will be wearing official U.S. Census Bureau identification, so that they can be identified.  Workers will also be wearing masks, to protect themselves and residents with whom they interact with.  Residents can avoid the need for a visit from the U.S. Census Bureau by returning their census online at www.my2020census.gov or over the phone at 1-844-330-2020.

To request a vote by mail application or for any questions, residents can contact the City of Springfield’s Election Office at (413) 787-6190 or email at elections@springfieldcityhall.com.  Residents can also visit the Election Office website for more information at www.springfield-ma.gov/elections.
