Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with State Representative Bud L. Williams to celebrate the 34th Annual Black American Heritage Ceremony at City Hall today.
The program included speakers, music, a flag raising, and special award presentations, with the keynote address delivered by Bishop Talbert Swan. The ceremony also marked the 34th annual observance of Black History Month in Springfield and was attended by direct descendants of the Peter Brace Brigade from the civil war providing a lesson in living history.
Recognized at today’s ceremony were Tyrone Denson, First African American District Chief; Rupert Daniel, First African American Deputy Police Commissioner; and businessman Daniel Brightwell, who has reached a milestone, celebrating 50 years of business.
