Puerto Rican Heritage Celebrated in Springfield

29th annual flag raising held Saturday, November 3, 3018

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Sgt. Gumersindo Gomez, Executive Director of the Bilingual Veterans’ Outreach Center hosted this years’ Puerto Rican flag raising ceremony on the City Hall steps on Saturday. Mayor Sarno presented a proclamation declaring the month of November as Puerto Rican Heritage Month in the City of Springfield. For the occasion they were joined by Governor Charlie Baker, Lt. Governor Karyn Polito, Secretary of Housing & Economic Development Jay Ash, State Representatives Jose Tosado and Carlos Gonzalez, City Council President Orlando Ramos, City Councilors Adam Gomez, Jesse Lederman and Tracye Whitfield, School Committee Member Maria Perez and members of the community.

“This flag raising marks the 29th anniversary celebration of Puerto Rican Heritage Month in our City. I wish to recognize the positive impact that the Puerto Rican community has had upon the social, cultural, economic development and in their military service to our country on behalf of our city,” said Mayor Sarno. “Especially poignant with this year’s flag raising is our thoughts, prayers and continued outreach to aid Puerto Rico in their time of need after the devastating hurricanes.”
