Springfield Named a Leading Market for STEM Professionals

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno is pleased to announce that the Springfield has been recognized as 2017’s 5th Best Metro Area for STEM Professionals in a recent study conducted by WalletHub.com.

Mayor Sarno said, “I’m so glad that our Springfield, once again, is on another ‘good list!’ This positive ranking is a testament to my administration’s continued efforts to pursue working public/private collaborations and partnerships with our schools, businesses, innovation/entrepreneurial and philanthropic institutions to push and enhance STEM workforce initiatives that create jobs and economic development opportunities. Our strategic plans are starting to pay dividends.”

To identify the best markets for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) workers, WalletHub analysts compared the 100 most populous metro areas across the nation using 17 key metrics, including employment growth, projected demand for STEM jobs, and annual median wage.

According to WalletHub, the STEM job market in the Springfield area was rated:

  • 3rd – STEM Employment Growth
  • 1st – Math Performance
  • 22nd – Quality of Engineering Universities
  • 3rd – Annual Median Wage Growth for STEM Workers
  • 31st – Housing Affordability
  • 36th Unemployment Rate for Holders of Bachelor’s Degrees or Higher
  • 2nd – Projected Demand for STEM Jobs by 2020
