CITY OF SPRINGFIELD AND SPRINGFIELD PARKING AUTHORITY TO UTILIZE NEW TOOL TO COLLECT DELINQUENT EXCISE TAXES AND OUTSTANDING PARKING TICKETS
June 20, 2012 - Springfield’s Collector Stephen J. Lonergan announced today that as of Monday, July 9, 2012, the City of Springfield is implementing new technology to collect delinquent motor vehicle excise taxes and is working with the Springfield Parking Authority for the collection of outstanding parking tickets.
The technology employs vehicle mounted license plate readers which will detect and alert officials to the location of vehicles with delinquent taxes and outstanding parking tickets.
Cars may be booted, towed and impounded if there are outstanding excise taxes and parking tickets owed. The vehicle will not be released to the taxpayer until all obligations to the City are satisfied.
Currently there is approximately $5.6 million in delinquent excise taxes and $5.7 million in parking citations.
