South End Revitalization Project Information

Project Manager:     Samalid Hogan, Office of Planning and Economic Development

Background: In March, 2007, the Boston Chapter of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), conducted a series of meetings and investigations in the South End neighborhood.  Their study was focused mainly on the Hollywood district and the Gemini site.  The result was a detailed report with their findings and strategies for revitalizing the neighborhood (see on list of reports below).

In early 2008, GLC Development Resources prepared a report that studied in detailed the retail and housing market conditions in the South End.  A later report released in July 2008, identified a more specific revitalization plan and action agenda for the South End which would improve the quality of life and housing choice for local residents.

The revitalization plan recommendations were refined with the help of a community process undertaken by the City and group of stakeholders, the South End Revitalization Coalition.  Several neighborhood meetings have also been held to discuss specific aspects of the project.

Project Boundaries: The South End neighborhood with a particular focus on the Hollywood area and the former Gemini site.

Objectives:
  • Work with police & neighbors to increase public safety
  • Improve vehicle & pedestrian circulation through neighborhood
  • Increase visibility and safety of Emerson Wight Park
  • Improve curb appeal of existing apartment buildings
  • Increase income diversity by providing new housing ownership opportunities
  • Enhance Main Street to retain and attract businesses
