Can I get free trees?

Yes! Planting is occurring across all Springfield neighborhoods.

Call 3-1-1 today to set up a site visit with a forester to determine the quantity and species of tree(s).

Are the trees really free?

Yes, you just need to agree to water the trees for two years.

Do you plant on private property or only on public property?

We plant on both private and public property, but this program strives to plant mostly on private property. Our city tree belts and planting areas are limited in space, so there is more opportunity for planting on private property. If you are strictly looking for public trees on the tree belt, please note that when you contact 3-1-1 and the City Forester will add your information and request to their planting list.

How long does it take?

It varies. The first step is to call Springfield's information line, 3-1-1 and request a tree through our program. Once they have processed your request information, we will then return your call to schedule a site visit. In the busy seasons of spring and fall, the total process may take a few weeks to complete.

What kinds of trees are available?

There are over 60 different types of trees available.  Shade trees are the priority of this program, with limited evergreens.  Species change every season based on nursery availability, and substitutions may be necessary.  Talk with your local forester to learn more.

Can I choose the species?

Yes, you can work with your forester to choose the species from the approved list. We strive to secure the chosen species for planting, however, depending on nursery availability, you may have to substitute a comparable species.

Do you plant native trees?

Yes, the GGCP plants both native trees and trees from similar climates and hardiness zones that are adapted to tolerate the urban environment.  Not all native trees are suitable for planting in urban areas.

Do you plant fruit trees?

No. The GGCP is tasked with creating an overstory of new tree canopy in cities, through the planting of shade trees.  Fruit trees are typically managed to encourage fruit production, which incorporates pruning practices which run counter to the development of overstory canopy. So, unfortunately, they do not fit into the long-term planting goals of this program.

Do you plant bushes, flowers or other landscaping?

No, just trees!

How many trees can I get?

The number of trees is only limited by the space available. Professional urban foresters will meet with you on site to determine by the principles of “Right Tree, Right Place” the number of trees that will reasonably fit on the planting location.

Do you remove old trees to make space for new trees?

No. If you have a dead or dying tree that is scheduled to come down, please contact the GGCP after the process is complete.  Old stumps or roots may also impede the tree planting process if they are large.

*If you are getting a tree on the tree belt, the Forestry Division will be able to assist with stump removal. NOTE - this does not apply to private property, only the tree belt and public property.

I work during the day, when do you do site visits?

Our operational hours are from 7:00am-3:30pm, but foresters can schedule some visits in the early evenings as well. You do not have to be home for the actual tree planting.

I don’t think I have enough space for trees, do I?

We have trees of all shapes and sizes, and more often than not can find a species that will fit in your yard. Give us a call and schedule a visit! You’d be surprised to see what we can plant in your yard.

I don’t own the home, can I still get a tree?

Yes, as long as we have the homeowner’s written permission, we can plant for you. Call a forester to find out more, they can provide you with information to give to your landlord about the program.
